Note: Windows Subsystem for Android™ and the Amazon Appstore will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store after March 5, 2025. Learn more.

Apps used in the Windows Subsystem for Android™ require an additional screen reader. Most of your accessibility settings in Windows will apply to apps in the Subsystem, like text scaling, closed captions, dark theme, and color filters. The Subsystem Screen Reader works in apps that have accessibility support. Here’s what else you need to know.

Navigate with a keyboard

Using the Subsystem Screen Reader

There are two ways to turn on the Subsystem Screen Reader. Here’s how:

  1. Select Start, enter Windows Subsystem for Android, then choose the app from the results. Make sure the Subsystem Screen Reader is turned on.

  2. On your keyboard, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + T to turn the Subsystem Screen Reader on or off. You can do this any time you're using an app in the Subsystem.

Switching apps

When you switch from a Windows app to a mobile app, listen for your current Windows screen reader to announce the title of the window. When it announces Subsystem Screen Reader, press the keyboard shortcut (Windows logo key + CTRL + T) to switch to it. You might want to turn off the screen reader you use with Windows.

For a list of keyboard shortcuts, see Windows Subsystem for Android™ Subsystem Screen Reader keyboard shortcuts

Note: Touch input is turned off when you use the Subsystem Screen Reader.

Using magnifier

If you use Windows with Magnifier, you’ll still see the enlarged zoom as you move your mouse around. Text cursor magnification isn’t currently supported.
