If you receive a one-to-one or group chat invitation from someone you haven't chatted with before in Microsoft Teams (free), you will be prompted to accept the invitation before joining the chat.

To join a one-to-one chat from a new contact

  1. Go to the new chat in your Chat list.

  2. You will have three options:

    • Block - This will block the person and they will not have access to your profile or presence status. However, you will still have the chat in your Recent chat list. Learn more about deleting a chat.

    • Accept - This will accept the invitation so you can view the chat and start messaging your new contact. This will also allow the new contact to access your profile and presence status. The chat will remain in your Recent chat list.

    • Preview messages - This will allow you to view the messages in the chat before deciding if you want to Accept or Block the contact.

Note: The new chat will remain in your Chat list until you take action with the chat.

To join a group chat from a new contact

  1. Go to the new group chat in your Chat list.

  2. You will have three options:

    • Delete chat - This will delete the chat and will give you the option to block the initiator as well if necessary. The group chat will be deleted from your Chat list.

    • OK - This will accept the invitation so you can view the chat and start messaging the group.

    • Preview messages - This will allow you to view the messages in the group chat before deciding if you want to Delete chat or select OK to join.

Note: The new group chat will remain in your Chat list until you take action with the group.
